\u201cEsp\u00edrito Santo<\/em>\u201d was recorded one October day in Lisbon in the cellar of the \u201cEsp\u00edrito Santo\u201d building. Formerly a bank, this building had been empty many years and was recently opened again for artists to use as studio and exhibition space. The room we recorded in, resembling at first glance more a cave than a cellar, is remarkable for its acoustics. With eight-meter high ceilings, brick walls and concrete floor we found ourselves dealing with a very responsive space. In addition to this, the local subway line ran adjacent to the building and its vibrations could be felt (and heard) during the recording.<\/div>\n
Manuel suggested we record in this space. In the end, as much our musical interaction as our relationship to the acoustical qualities of the space shaped how we played and how these recordings ultimately sounded. It would be an exaggeration and perhaps a clich\u00e9 to once again invoke the name of Fernando Pessoa with reference to Lisbon, but for me there is definitely something to the pace and feeling of these recordings which reminds me of Pessoa’s endless lifetime opus \u00a0\u201cThe Book of Disquiet<\/em>\u201d. The music progresses slowly and at times verging on a dreamlike momentum. While recording these pieces I soon lost my sense of time, floating in the catacomb of sound we were creating.<\/div>\n

\nEn lambeaux, comme effiloch\u00e9es, les deux longues pi\u00e8ces de ce disque enregistr\u00e9 \u00e0 Lisbonne en octobre 2009 par Manuel Mota (guitare \u00e9lectrique) et Jason Kahn (percussion, synth\u00e9tiseur analogique) exploitent \u2013 par effleurements et r\u00eaverie lente \u2013 les propri\u00e9t\u00e9s acoustiques d’un lieu au plafond particuli\u00e8rement \u00e9lev\u00e9 et aux murs de briques. Tout \u00e9pars qu’il soit, le jeu de Mota n’en est pas moins ancr\u00e9 dans l’instrument, tandis que Kahn est \u00e0 son plus discret, ou pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment \u00e0 sa plus essentielle et influente discr\u00e9tion. Ind\u00e9pendants, plong\u00e9s dans un songe qu’ils semblent parfois ne partager que de loin, les deux musiciens sculptent un souffle, une rumeur \u00e9clair\u00e9e de quelques lointains carillons presque \u00e9teints, dont l’effet hypnotique peut gagner ; on comprend alors les mots de JK : \u00ab Durant l’enregistrement, j’ai rapidement perdu la perception du temps pour flotter dans la catacombe sonore que nous \u00e9tions en train de cr\u00e9er\u00bb. A quel volume \u00e9couter ce beau disque ? Point trop fort, c’est la promesse de fant\u00f4mes… Plus haut, le surgissement d’un monde long, d\u00e9licatement vibrant.
